Dual Diagnosis And Addiction

The treatment of addiction is typically complicated by the presence of other psychological conditions existing in the same person.  Without attending to the treatment of these other conditions, which we describe under the definition of dual diagnosis, the addiction is doomed to continue and repeat itself throughout life.  Most treatment facilities, including typical twelve step addiction programs simply neglect the presence of this dual diagnosis, innocently attempting to treat the addiction without also treating the dual diagnosis. This neglect is a consequence of a kind of anti-medical, anti-psychiatric prejudice, which unfortunately contributes to the maintenance of the addiction and therefore the dual diagnosis as well.  Since Tekuma Recovery introduces a medically qualified and supervised treatment, the dual diagnosis is identified and treated.  Dual diagnosis includes a range of possible diagnoses, some of which require the concomitant use of medications.  Examples of dual diagnosis include depression, anxiety, bipolarity, post-traumatic stress disorder, and various forms of temporary and/or chronic psychoses, some of which are actually caused by substances. Again, if these concomitant dual diagnoses are left untreated, the patient will undoubtedly return to his/her addiction and/or alcoholism.
